Child Pain Relief

Child Pain Relief

Diagnosing the source of a young child's pain or discomfort can be tricky at the best of times. When your little one is hurt or unwell, pain signals travel to the brain but often they don't know how to interpret this message and can't express what is going on. They often give us different signs they are unwell, and as you get to know your little one you will understand what they are trying to tell you. Their mood has a lot to do with how they deal with pain, if they are tired or hungry they will often react differently to usual to a fall or a pain. If an older child can remember having that pain before, they react accordingly anticipating what lies ahead.

Babies are the biggest puzzle, crying is their most effective means of communication and gets them immediate results and attention. However, you will get to know your baby's cries and what they mean. If the cries are a different pitch than usual and are not due to the usual triggers like hunger, tiredness or the need for a fresh nappy, then maybe they are feeling unwell or are in pain. Trust your own instincts here. Check for a temperature. Remove clothes and search for any obvious source of pain or discomfort. Paracetamol or Ibuprofen are common choices for pain relief in young babies and children. If after all your best efforts, you are still worried or unsure, contact a nurse or doctor for advice on what to do next. Older babies and toddlers can communicate better, they will rub a sore area, tug at a painful ear or point the problem out and remove the guessing game.

Mild fever, congestion or a blocked nose, headache, teething, post-immunisation fever or a sore throat can all be treated with oral paracetamol or ibuprofen suspensions. Paracetamol is suitable for 2 months of age, and Ibuprofen from 3 months. A fever is a very common occurrence in early childhood and very rarely a cause for alarm. If you child has a temperature after a few readings, of 37.5 degrees Celsius, they have a fever. Remove some layers of clothing to keep them cool. Hydration is so important, they may have little or no appetite so give plenty fluids until it returns. Most children will respond quickly with a dose of paracetamol or ibuprofen. If they are vomiting or very distressed, suppositories can be useful instead.
