The eye is an extremely sensitive organ and many people experience problems with their eyes from time to time. A common problem with the eye is dry, tired uncomfortable eyes often as a result of studying or looking at a computer screen for extended periods of time. Our eyes also dry out as we age, or produce less tears or poor quality tears. There are many products available at the OTC counter to treat this, many based on artificial tears formulations or simple eye lubricants such as Artelac, Tears Naturale, Liposic is a clear eye gel that gives longer lasting relief, Optrex Actimist spray for Tired and Uncomfortable eyes is a simple to use spray for those who find instilling drops very difficult. Murine also do a drop to soothe dry, tired eyes.
Another common problem is red, irritated eyes, usually as a result of something in the environment. Optrex eye wash can clean the surface of the eye and soothe any irritation, and Optrex Clear Eye drops can reduce down redness by shrinking the blood vessels in the eye. Optrex Actimist also do a spray for dry, irritated eyes that is simple to use. Murine have a drop for Red Irritated eyes also.
Common eye infections like conjunctivitis, which is an inflammation of the membrane that covers the white of the eye and the inside of the eyelid, can be treated with Brolene or Golden Eye drops or ointment, if it is bacterial in origin. Conjunctivitis can cause the eye to become red, sore and swollen, it often is accompanied by a gritty feeling in the eye and may have a yellow discharge coming from the eye and crusting on the eyelid, especially by morning. If conjunctivitis accompanies a cold or flu, it may be viral in origin and will have to run it's course. If it is brought about by an allergy then anti-histamine drops are useful e.g Opticrom, Otrivine Anthistin. A stye, is a painful lump or abscess inside or outside the eyelid, caused by a bacterial infection. Brolene or Golden Eye ointment will help clear the infection, placing a hot (not burning) flannel over the eye helps soothe the eyelid and can help draw out some of the pus. Blepharitis is an inflammation in the eyelid, caused by clogging of the tiny oil glands near the eyelashes. It can make the eyelids very red and sore and skin there can be flaky and dry. Blephaclean wipes are a sterile eye wipe that helps reduce the build-up around the glands and daily cleaning keeps the pores unclogged.
