Ear Medication
Ear wax build-up is why most people come to the OTC counter regarding their ears. It is a naturally occurring substance in the ear, that protects it from dust, bacteria and water. Most ear wax isn't a problem, it stays in the outer part of the ear and is washed away. Problems occur when the ear wax impacts, if it is pushed back during cleaning, towards the eardrum, reduced vibrations affect hearing and it's hearing loss that brings people to the pharmacy. Cerumol and Cerumol Olive oil help soften earwax for easy removal. Cleaning the ear too often or too forcefully can cause ear pain, Audispray disperses wax in the ear by breaking it up into small particles.
Earache, is more common in children than adults but can occur at any stage of life. It is generally due to an infection or inflammation or fluid build up in the middle ear. Otitis Media or middle ear infections often follow a cold or flu or an upper respiratory tract infection. The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the respiratory tract so bacteria can set up camp quite easily. Tropex ear drops contain an anti-inflammatory which can give pain relief for these infections. Antibiotics are often prescribed which clear up the infections quickly.
Swimmers ear or otitis externa develops usually due to excess water entering the ear, and causing the ear canal to become red and inflamed and tender to the touch especially when pressing the tag at the front of the ear, when chewing or wiggling the earlobe. Earplugs can be used when swimming or showering to prevent the problem recurring.
